オーストラリア・シドニーのニュー・サウス・ウェールズ州立美術館は、2022年12月3日（土）に新しいアートギャラリー棟をオープンする。この「シドニー・モダン・プロジェクト」は、既存の建物の改装と新しい建物を増築し、2棟の美術館に建てかえる取り組みで、スペースを約2倍に広げ、訪れた人により多くの展示とアートを楽しむ空間を提供するという。

設計を手がけたのはSANAAの妹島和世と西沢立衛。シドニー・ハーバーを見下ろすガディガル族のカントリーに、パブリック・アート・ガーデンで接続された2つの建物からなる新しいアート・ミュージアム・キャンパスが誕生する。

石灰岩で覆われた3つのアート・パビリオンは、ハーバーに向かって緩やかに下る。さらに、同州で調達された材料を用いた、2階にわたる250mの版築の壁を構築。3400平米の屋上にはアートテラスと中庭が用意されている。

柱のないギャラリー、タイムベースト・アートのギャラリー、第二次世界大戦で使われた海軍の燃料庫 (通称「タンク」) を再利用したギャラリーなど、オーストラリアでもっともユニークなアートの中心地となるだろう。

また、大規模なスペースではアボリジニとトレス海峡諸島民のアート作品も展示し、国際的に知られた同館のコレクションを紹介する。シドニーの言葉で「この道」を意味するこのイリバナ（Yiribana）ギャラリーが新館の入口になる。

妹島と西沢は、「ニュー・サウス・ウェールズ州立美術館のチームとの緊密な協力のもと、街、公園、港とともに息づく、周囲と調和する美術館の設計を目指しました。この美しい環境では、どこにいてもアートとのつながりが感じられる特別な場所になることを期待しています」とコメントを寄せている。
